Chapter 3

Personal Reflection

This poem is about the party that Gatsby hosted for his neighbors and friends. It describes how big Gatsby's parties were. His parties were full of people since he lives in a mansion on the beach. Gatsby had a lot of different activities for the guest to enjoy including: buffet, orchestra, dance floor, the beach, etc.

Music
nights
like moths among the whisperings
every Friday
with
colored lights
brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun
among
joyous
party
guests
to Gatsby's house
invited
not invited-they were there.

Literary Analysis

Theme Analysis
The purpose of this chapter is to show the relationship that was introduced between Gatsby and Nick. Nick was invited to Gatsby's party, which he went to with Jordan Baker. In this chapter you can see the relationship beginning to grow between Jordan and Nick as they spent most of their time together at the party. At first Nick didn't know who Gatsby was until the man he was talking to said he was the host of the party-Gatsby himself. Towards the end of the chapter, is when you are starting to see the relationship slightly increasing,as Gatsby invited Nick to ride in his hydroplane the day after the party. The purpose is created through the character development because even though Nick and Gatsby are neighbors, they haven't interacted with each other face to face till the party. If there was no party, there would be no interaction at all unless there was a different plot to the story. This meeting helps the reader understand the background information for the storyline that the author is trying to create. At this point, we see that they are already getting along well and they are moving in the direction to a good and strong relationship in the story. The purpose is also created by some foreshadowing because in the beginning of the story, Gatsby is mentioned quite often. It is said how great he is, and how he was so different than everyone else in Nick's opinion.
